How To Build a $30K Per Month One-Person Business (Ft. Michael Lim)

Write • Build • Scale Podcast [Episode #11]

In this week’s episode, I sat down with

- a full-time solopreneur who scaled his one-person business past $30K/month.

We talked about building a business around your skills, using leverage to scale, and how to stop overcomplicating the path to six figures.

We also covered:

  • The 3 P’s of starting a one-person business; how to turn your profession, pain, or passion into profit (00:02:41)

  • Why any niche - no matter how weird - can scale to six figures a year (00:05:44)

  • The exact step-by-step path to go from freelancer → consultant → digital product creator (00:11:07)

  • How to use social media to validate your offers before you build them (00:20:27)

  • The easiest way to add leverage: sell one offer at different price points (00:29:31)

  • The mindset shift that helped Michael scale past $30K/month (00:40:08)

And much, much more…

Key Lessons From This Episode:

Lesson 1: Start Your One-Person Business With The 3 P’s

You don’t need a revolutionary business idea to start your one-person business.

Instead, look at your 3 P’s - the three easiest entry points for any creator or solopreneur:

  • Profession: The skills you already get paid for. What are people currently hiring you to do?

  • Pain/Problem: The pain points or problems you’ve personally overcome that others still struggle with.

  • Passion: The topics you could talk about for hours. Things that genuinely energize you.

You only need one of these to begin your one-person business.

And thanks to the internet, even niche passions can become six-figure businesses when paired with the right leverage.

Lesson 2: Validate Before You Build

Most creators build backwards. They start by creating the product, then hope someone will want it. Instead, flip that approach.

Start by analyzing your content. If you notice your audience is consistently commenting, asking follow-up questions, or engaging with a particular topic, that’s a sign of demand.

Only then should you turn it into a product, program, or offer.

Lesson 3: Turn One Offer Into Multiple Revenue Sources

Most entrepreneurs treat their business like a restaurant menu - offering completely different options to appeal to everyone.

But that only dilutes your focus and drains your time.

Instead, do what Michael teaches: pick one core problem to solve, and offer it at different levels of access or depth.

  • A do-it-yourself version for self-starters who prefer to learn at their own pace (e.g. an online course)

  • A done-with-you version for those who want guidance (e.g. group coaching or individual coaching)

  • A done-for-you version for clients who want the full solution without doing any of the work themselves

You’re solving the same problem - you’re just charging for different levels of your time and attention.

Lesson 4: Show Who You Are, Not Just What You Do

People buy into you before they buy into your offer.

So, share your personal stories, quirks, and experiences, while also showing the work you do and the results you create.

In an age where AI can generate how-to content instantly, your story and personality are what make you stand out.

Lesson 5: Solopreneurship Doesn’t Mean Doing It Alone

Just because you’re a solopreneur or solo creator doesn’t mean you have to work alone.

The fastest way to grow is to surround yourself with people already playing the game at a higher level.

Surround yourself with the right mentors, peers, coaches, and communities - and you’ll move further (and faster) than you ever could by doing it all on your own.
