Thank you for this insightful article! New on here en genuinely so excited for this journey. Already wrote 4 articles, which I feel is not bad, getting the hang of notes and now, on here engaging 😅
Thank you. Very helpful. My intended focus is organic and regenerative gardening in the Ozarks; the Ozarks being a particularly difficult gardening environment. But, to date, most of my readers are gardeners in other places and most write about gardening themselves. Should I drop the regional emphasis or continue to build it and believe they will come?
Thank you, Jari. We hear a lot about niching down. With gardening being overly-represented, online, it seems being specific to one set of challenges would be helpful in building community. However, it may be necessary to attract readers from outside the Substack platform? I was not aware when I came to this platform that the search engines do not crawl most Substack articles. I love the way the Substack community works, but I would be interested in an in depth look at SEO for substack writers.
I live in the Ozarks and I agree. It is a very difficult place to garden in; however, part of that could be due to my brown thumb. Keep your pride and focus in the Ozarks, but talk to anyone who grows anything anywhere.
Daily postings are coming to my subscribers on Substack. Not yet, but I am getting into the mindset and hope to launch soon. And I am seeking a few others to come along for the ride as an editor / contributor.
Appreciate you two taking the time to break things down in such easy to digest directions. Your collaboration works well together. Especially heard the mixing educational & personal bit. That one is going to take some thinking. Thanks for the knowledge❣️

Dropping the regional emphasis will definitely help with attracting more readers!
You can still publish the occasional piece about Ozark specifically (or reference it in your articles every now and then).

Very helpful for us newbies!
With regards to niche-ing down, what do you think about my current approach — “science with a focus on climate and natural hazards”? Thanks
Nice advice. I think I'm gonna get started with notes now
Let's go for it!
