Before Substack, I bundled private sessions into 10-packs. I’m not opposed to doing them but I’m working on freeing up my time, the time I need to be physically accountable. So my favorite is the mini-course. Haven’t done it yet, but I plan to! Thanks for this. You say it’s easy to sell—I’m going to take your word for it!
Good question, Jari. I have two lead magnets that I wonder if I can expand into a mini. Also, from my previous coaching life, I had created a simple 6-weeks to sustained energy course that I go back and forth on its relevance since it doesn’t touch food.
The sustained energy course still sounds very appealing to me! Being fatigued and low on energy is a big problem for many people.
And it's not too far off from your current niche (even though it doesn't touch food). You can always add a bonus guide to it with healthy foods/meals for more energy.
This is such a practical and insightful post—thank you for sharing! I love how you break down actionable ways to monetize a Substack beyond just paid subscriptions. The focus on mini-courses, listening to your audience, and building trust through free content is spot-on. It’s a great reminder that diversifying revenue streams isn’t just smart—it’s necessary for sustainable growth.
So many writers burn out thinking paid subs are the only real path — when in reality, there are multiple ways to build a meaningful, sustainable ecosystem.
I would like to offer meal plans. Is it better to go for 7 days, 15 days, or 30 days? Should we need to provide real pictures or only the recipes? Will it be breakfast, lunch, and dinner? What should we charge?
I'm here, and that's a big start!!! Now I have to read this clearly and then make a plan!!!!
:)

Ooh, that’s an idea, thank you 😊
I can highly recommend it, Savitree!
What topic(s) do you have in mind for your mini-course?
Thanks Jari, solid advice and congrats on crushing it on Substack. What do you think is the quickest method to start building a community?
I think its the last one building templates on notion, your thoughts?
The quickest method is to make sure everyone in the community has shared goals and objectives.
Nothing unites more than working towards similar goals :)

Appreciate it, Harshi!

Clear, generous teaching as always.

Hello to everyone here! Jari, this information was incredibly helpful! Thank you!

Great insight! Are you saying video courses, or written courses work better?
