3 Ways to Sell Your Paid Substack Tier Without Feeling 'Salesy'
You can attract paid subscribers in ways that feel natural and authentic
One of the most powerful features of Substack is the ability to earn recurring income from paid subscribers.
At Write • Build • Scale, we recently crossed the 600+ paid subscriber mark, and it feels amazing to know that people value our work enough to invest in it.
But for many Substack creators, promoting their paid tier can feel awkward.
They don’t want to feel like they’re constantly spamming their readers with promo messages or come across as overly salesy.
But, fortunately, you don’t have to.
You can attract paid subscribers in ways that feel natural and authentic (instead of annoying and overly promotional).
Here are 3 proven strategies we use to get more paid subscribers - without pushy sales tactics or endless promotions.
#1: Use Simple “Content Funnels”
A content funnel is one of the most powerful ways to guide your free subscribers toward becoming paying supporters without being pushy.
Here’s how it works:
You start with a free Substack post. This is the top of your funnel. This post delivers genuine value, builds trust, and keeps your audience engaged.
Inside that free post, you include a link to a premium resource - an article, guide, or tool that’s only available to paid subscribers. This is the middle of your funnel.
If the free content hits home, curious readers will naturally want more.
And when they click through, they hit the paywall, the bottom of your funnel. That’s when people can decide for themselves if they want to upgrade to unlock the rest.
No hard sell. No fancy tools.
Just great content that leads to even better content.
Here’s a specific example of how we’re using this strategy for the Write • Build • Scale publication:
This strategy works so well because it puts the reader first.
You're not begging for a subscription. Instead, you’re showing them that what’s behind the paywall is worth paying for.
Your free readers get a taste of your value and naturally want more. And that "more" lives behind the paywall.

#2: Create a “Premium Content Library”
Our premium content library is one of our best marketing assets, and we link to it from many of our free posts.
The benefit of a premium content library is that, for paid subscribers, it’s a convenient way to access all the exclusive content they’ve unlocked.
But for free subscribers, it’s a glimpse of everything they’re currently missing out on, which creates interest and desire to join the paid tier.
In this video, I’ll show exactly how to create your premium content library:
